Biodiversity directly relates to cultural diversity and the different views people have. Many times the loss of biodiversity is a huge threat to the cultural diversity of a place. Culture in a region is lost due to the culture’s lack of ability to adapt when the biodiversity of the region is lost. If a society relies on a certain plant or animal to survive and that plant or animal becomes extinct, the society will be forced out of the area. They either have to abandon aspects of their culture or the people of that culture would have to risk not surviving. When biodiversity is lost, people are forced to assimilate to larger cultures and cultural diversity is lost. Both sources give the example of language loss. When people assimilate to larger cultures due to the loss of biodiversity, languages are lost. Wade Davis talked about how there are 6,000 languages but over half are no longer being taught. The depletion of biodiversity is threatening cultural diversity. Therefore, I believe that governing bodies should be actively involved in protecting cultural diversity.
Biodiversity directly relates to cultural diversity because different resources mean different things to people. Wade Davis talked about how a kid from the Andes may believe a mountain is an apu spirit that will direct his or her destiny whereas, a kid from Montana may believe it is a pile of rocks. People have different relationships to the resources of a place. If biodiversity is lost, so is cultural diversity. For example, industrialization can negatively affect the cultural diversity by forcing people to speak a certain language and in turn, forgetting their native language. Likewise, industrialization can negatively affect biodiversity by increase pollution and threatening species. With the loss of a variety of life and the loss of a variety of cultures, I think the government should be actively involved in helping to preserve cultural diversity. Having different cultures is beneficial to humans. Cultures can share ideas, knowledge, history, values, and traditions to help strengthen the overall well-being of the world. The government can help to preserve cultures so we do not lose this. Australia does this by implementing programs that promote cultural diversity. Once people see the benefits of diversity, they will start to see the importance of the government helping to preserve it. These programs help Australians to respect one another, treat others with kindness, and gain a sense of belonging. With a multicultural society, people will be able to share knowledge and ideas to make the society as a whole a better place.
Although I believe the government should be actively involved in protecting cultural diversity, many people disagree. Many people think that the loss of culture is natural. They believe that loss of biodiversity and cultural diversity is a part of life. They think that the government cannot do anything about the disappearance of culture. However, I think the government can reduce the number of cultures being lost. They may not be able to completely stop the depletion of cultural diversity but they will be able to protect some cultures or at the very least, slow down the loss of cultural diversity. Furthermore, many people think that the government would become overly involved in cultures. They think that politics would become integrated into cultures if the government helped to preserve cultural diversity. However, I think that the government can be limited in how involved they are allowed to be in cultures. The government does not have to be directly involved with the cultures but rather they can help protect biodiversity, which in turn would help preserve cultural diversity. The government can indirectly protect cultural diversity. Overall, I think that the issues of biodiversity are related to the area of threats to cultural diversity. I believe that the government should help to protect cultural diversity.
